FOUNTAIN VALLEY, CA, UNITED STATES, October 20, 2026 /EINPresswire.com/ -- FOUNTAIN VALLEY, Calif., October 20, 2026 - California hazardous waste generators can now complete their Title 22 training online. NATEC International, Inc., an environmental health and safety (EHS) training company, today announced its online California Title 22 Hazardous Waste Generator Training, a four-hour course with 60 days of access that adds an online option to the in-person and virtual Title 22 classes NATEC already offers.

The course teaches the California generator rules in Title 22 of the California Code of Regulations (22 CCR Division 4.5), which the Department of Toxic Substances Control (DTSC) administers and Certified Unified Program Agencies (CUPAs) enforce locally, including California's Generator Improvements Rule, effective July 1, 2024. It follows a waste from the first determination to the truck leaving the site, so each lesson builds on the one before it.

Why train online?

Online delivery lets employees complete the course around their work schedule, and it lets employers start training when a new employee starts instead of waiting for a scheduled class. Learners have 60 days of access, so they can work through the material in sessions. Employers who prefer a classroom can still choose NATEC's in-person or virtual options by calling (800) 969-3228.

"Title 22 is California's own set of rules, and California employees need training that reflects it, from waste codes to manifests. Adding the course online makes that training easier to fit into a busy facility, and our in-person and virtual classes are still available for employers who prefer them," said Allison Croulet, Vice President of NATEC International, Inc.

Who has to be trained?

Large quantity generators must train personnel within six months of hire, job placement or assignment to a new position, whichever is later, and personnel must take part in an annual review (22 CCR 66262.17(a)(7)). Small quantity generator personnel must be familiar with proper waste handling and emergency procedures for their duties (22 CCR 66262.16), and annual training is considered a best practice.

The rules that apply depend on generator status: very small quantity generators (VSQGs), small quantity generators (SQGs) or large quantity generators (LQGs). The course shows learners how to identify their status and obtain a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identification number, and it reviews the most common generator violations.

"The interactive games kept our employees engaged and turned complex regulations into lessons that stick," said Drake, Vice President at GENI, a NATEC training client.

What do learners cover?

Everything starts with the determination: is the material hazardous waste? Learners work with the four hazardous characteristics, which are ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity and toxicity, along with California presumptive lists and California waste codes. The course also covers wastes with their own rules, including used oil, universal waste, empty containers, and hazardous debris and contaminated soil.

Next come containers and tanks, which are among the areas where generators are often cited. Learners cover storage, labeling, closure, secondary containment and incompatible wastes, apply accumulation time limits and volumes, and run satellite accumulation areas, the locations at or near the point where waste is generated. Aerosol can puncturing is covered as well. Inspections and housekeeping, emergency preparedness (contingency plans, emergency procedures and equipment), personnel training documentation, and recordkeeping and reports complete the compliance picture.

The final lessons cover shipping: DTSC-registered transporters, the Uniform Hazardous Waste Manifest, e-Manifest (the electronic manifest system), and California manifest requirements and exceptions, followed by how to package, label, mark and placard hazardous waste for transport. Personnel who prepare waste for shipment also need hazmat employee training under 49 CFR 172.704, which NATEC offers as DOT Hazmat Ground Shipper Training (HM-181 Employee Training). HM-181 employee training is the name many employers use for U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) hazmat employee training.

Format and credit

The course includes worked examples, exercises and knowledge checks, and learners who complete it receive a certificate of completion from NATEC. NATEC is approved to offer Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS) continuing education units (CEUs), and the course earns 4 REHS CEUs. CEUs must be requested before the course begins.

Who should take it?

The course is for employees and supervisors at California facilities that generate hazardous waste, including EHS and compliance staff, facility and operations supervisors, warehouse and maintenance personnel and laboratory staff, as well as anyone who handles, inspects, packages, labels or ships hazardous waste or signs manifests. Large, small and very small quantity generators are covered, and no prior training is required. The course provides general awareness training, and employers remain responsible for site-specific training and for keeping training records. Regulations change, so employers should always refer to the current rules.
