Jason Sweeten, retired correctional counselor

Jason Sweeten, a retired correctional counselor with 31 years of service to the department, passed away Sept. 21, 2026.

Sweeten began his career with the department in April 1994 as a cadet at the Basic Correctional Officer Academy. After graduating, he reported to Ironwood State Prison in Blythe in May 1994.

He then transferred to High Desert State Prison in Susanville in July 1996. A dozen years later, he transferred to California State Prison, Sacramento, in November 2018. The following year, he promoted to correctional counselor in April 2019.

Sweeten retired from state service in October 2025.

“Jason Sweeten was always smiling and had a great attitude. He was well known for his bright shirts which could be spotted from a great distance. We grieve not only for the loss of an exceptional individual and partner, but also for the pain his family must endure,” according to CSP-Sacramento.

Details regarding funeral services are not yet available.
